The answer isn’t entirely straightforward.

When should I have my dog neutered / spayed?

Many dog owners in Basel ask themselves exactly this question. The commonly heard advice to neuter a dog either before or after the first heat cycle sounds simple — but it often falls short. Current scientific research, including large population-based studies from UC Davis, shows that the health effects of neutering depend strongly on the dog’s age, sex, and — crucially — breed. There is therefore no universally applicable “optimal age.” The decision of when to neuter should be made individually and on an evidence-based basis, together with an experienced veterinarian.

Large Breeds: The Most Meaningful and Conclusive Data

The most reliable findings come from medium and large breeds, where joint disease and certain cancers occur frequently enough to identify meaningful patterns. In breeds such as the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, and German Shepherd Dog, neutering before physical maturity increases the risk of cruciate ligament rupture, hip dysplasia, and in some cases cancers such as lymphoma or mast cell tumour. Delaying neutering until 18 to 24 months of age generally reduces these risks. In other breeds, such as the Siberian Husky, no measurable difference is seen at all — which underscores just how breed-specific these findings are.

Early neutering can carry specific risks

The studies also highlight cases where early neutering can be detrimental. Female Rhodesian Ridgebacks, for example, had a higher risk of mast cell tumours when neutered very early. Similar patterns are seen across several breeds, suggesting that the timing of hormone removal interacts with breed-specific vulnerabilities.

Small breeds: limited evidence, limited conclusions

Small breeds such as the Shih Tzu and Shetland Sheepdog do appear in the UC Davis tables, but the evidence base for these breeds is thin. Because small dogs rarely develop the joint diseases or cancers captured in these analyses, the datasets frequently lacked sufficient numbers to identify clear patterns. Where no elevated risk was detected, this typically reflects an inadequate sample size — not evidence that any particular neutering age has been shown to be the safest.

Why early neutering is still recommended in small dog breeds

Where strong medical evidence is lacking, early neutering in small dogs is often recommended for practical rather than health-related reasons: to prevent unwanted pregnancies, avoid problems associated with the heat cycle, and for other convenience considerations. These are legitimate reasons — but they should not be confused with evidence that early neutering is medically optimal.

Conclusion: tailored decisions are best

The research consistently shows that neutering is not a one-size-fits-all decision. The clearest data exist for large breeds, which often benefit from later neutering. Some females of certain breeds should avoid very early neutering altogether. For many small breeds, reliable evidence is simply lacking — meaning decisions depend more on lifestyle, behaviour, and the owner’s priorities.

The most responsible approach is individualised counselling — drawing on breed- and sex-specific findings where available, and weighing practical circumstances where the evidence is limited.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss neutering or spaying your dog.

Source: https://www.ucdavis.edu/magazine/how-identify-when-dog-should-be-spayed-and-neutered

Dr. Matt Matiasovic is a board-certified specialist in small animal surgery (Diplomate ECVS – www.ecvs.org).
